It is the policy in my Department only to engage the services of external consultants where it is felt to be appropriate and cost-effective, taking account of Government decisions and policy on the matter. Once initiated, the spend profile of each project is monitored by my Department on a monthly basis. The following tables set out the payments made by my Department to consultants during 2011 and to date in 2012. The element of the question relating to Health Service Executive expenditure on consultancy services has been referred to the Executive for direct reply to the Deputy.
