View answerI propose to take Questions Nos. 198 to 201, inclusive, together.
No data on the prevalence of Sickle Cell Disorders are routinely available.
The Hospital In-patient Enquiry (HIPE) system records details on each in-patient and daycase discharge from all publicly-funded acute hospitals but if a patient is admitted more than once for a specific condition, each admission is counted separately. For this reason, HIPE data cannot be interpreted as prevalence estimates.
Vital Statistics are compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The number of deaths from sickle-cell disorders with ICD-10 code D57 from 2007-2011 is detailed on the table. Data for 2011 is provisional and is subject to revision.
