Deputy Terence Flanagan asked the Minister for Health the reason the general practitioner card income limit for a couple over 70 is double that of a single person, but the income limit for a medical card for a couple over 70 is less than double that of a single person; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In making its budgetary decisions in a manner consistent with the introduction, on a phased basis, of a universal GP service without fees within its term of office, as set out in the Programme for Government and the Future Health strategy framework, it is the Government's intention not to remove access to GP services to persons aged 70 years and over who currently have such access.
