Deputy Eoghan Murphy asked the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the reason it is considered necessary to create a unique postal code for every household in the country in view of the fact that the Revenue Commissioners have conducted the same exercise creation on unique reference for each property for collection of local property tax. The design structure and functionality of the National Postcode is very different from that of other unique identifiers that exist in the public service databases and provides a rationale for its existence. The national postcode will be a publically available code, appear on mail items and be used for a variety of different purposes by public and private sector organisations.
