Ambulance Service Response Times

Questions (146)

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

146. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the revised approach to dealing with emergency call outs in response to serious road collisions whereby only an ambulance is now dispatched to assess the scene of the collision and a determination is then made to seek the assistance of fire brigade personnel rather than both ambulance and fire brigade personnel being dispatched as was previously the case; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that this revised approach is negatively affecting the treatment of victims of road collisions because of the time lapse involved for key fire brigade personnel to attend at a collision and the loss of precious time during the so-called golden hour after a collision has occurred. The misuse of alcohol affects the individual, the family and society. The Government has approved an extensive package of measures to deal with alcohol misuse to be incorporated in a Public Health (Alcohol) Bill. These measures are based on the recommendations contained in the Steering Group Report on a National Substance Misuse Strategy, 2012.

The provision of services to prevent and treat addiction to alcohol is the responsibility of the Health Service Executive and as such, I have referred this question to the Health Service Executive for attention and direct reply. If the Deputy has not received a reply from the HSE within 15 working days, please contact my Private Office who will follow up the matter with it.
