Seán Kyne

Question:

172. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the recent measure by the UK Government to provide mountain rescue teams with a rebate on VAT which is a way of alleviating the burden of VAT on the teams while still complying with the EU laws pertaining to VAT. I am aware of the measure the Deputy is referring to which was announced in the UK Autumn Statement 2014. However, as the Deputy will be aware and as Minister Varadkar has advised the House previously on this subject, exemption from VAT is entirely a matter for the Revenue Commissioners and my colleague the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan. In exchanges with representatives from mountain rescue organisations my officials have advised that it would be more appropriate for them to contact the Department of Finance in relation to this.
