View answerI am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they do not require taxpayers to advise them if they are retirees. However if certain assumptions are made regarding the definition of a retiree, it is possible to use the 2013 income tax returns, the latest year for which data are available, to provide the information sought by the Deputy. On the basis that a retiree is assumed to be a taxpayer aged 65 or over on 1 January 2013 and in receipt of trading or professional income, it is estimated that approximately 14,000 self-employed retirees submitted income tax returns in respect of 2013.
