Questions (521)

Jim Daly

Question:

521. Deputy Jim Daly asked the Minister for Education and Skills if she is satisfied with the outcome of a Student Universal Support Ireland grant application (details supplied), whereby a student lost out on a grant worth €1,500 due to earning €25 in September 2015 in advance of returning to college, given that if the student had earned this €25 in August 2015 it would not have affected qualification for the grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I understand that in the case of the student referred to by the Deputy, an appeal was considered by the independent Student Grants Appeals Board on 22nd September 2015 and the Board's decision issued directly to the student. The student was advised of his options in the decision letter. The options are that he may appeal to the High Court on a point of law under Section 21(6) of the Student Support Act 2011. The Ombudsman can examine a complaint from the student if he feels he has been unfairly treated in his dealings with SUSI or the Appeals Board.
