Phenylketonuria (PKU) is one of 16 conditions covered by the Long Term Illness Scheme, a statutory scheme administered by the HSE. Under this scheme, PKU patients are entitled to free approved drugs, medicines and medical and surgical appliances directly related to the treatment of the condition.

There are no plans to introduce a separate scheme providing specialised foods for PKU patients.
