My Department provides grant assistance to Local Authorities under a scheme known as the Improvement Works in Lieu (of Local Authority Housing) Scheme. This enables the authorities to repair, improve or extend privately-owned houses occupied or intended to be occupied by an approved housing applicant, as an alternative to the provision of local authority housing.

The administration of the scheme, including the assessment of applications, is a matter for each local authority.
