277. Deputy Michael McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government the number of private passenger road vehicles that were registered pre-1 July 2008 and post-1 July 2008; and the amount of road tax collected in 2015 and expected to be collected in 2016 from each category, in tabular form. At the end of May 2016, there were 1,101,273 vehicles under current taxation with a registration prior to July 2008. There were 927,211 vehicles taxed with a registration post-July 2008, including 10,304 commercial vehicles that are taxed privately on the basis of engine capacity (the CO2 rates of motor tax apply only to passenger cars). Gross receipts from private vehicles in 2015 and estimated receipts for 2016 are set out as follows:

Total gross motor tax receipts for 2015 were €1.124bn. Receipts in 2016 were €477,678,676 to the end of May, down 5.35% from the same period last year (€504,652,829). Gross motor tax receipts for 2016 are expected to be in the order of €1.075bn.
