Deputy Joan Collins asked the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation her views on the outcome of any reports her Department sought from agencies under its remit that related to health and safety and working conditions in the waste industry (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. View answerMindful that proper compliance with employment rights and health and safety legislation is in the interest of workers and the wider public, reports from the relevant agencies under the aegis of this Department on the operation of the waste collection sector were sought in September 2014. Such reports were furnished by the National Employment Rights Authority (now the Workplace Relations Commission), the Health and Safety Authority and the National Consumer Agency and the Competition Authority (now known as the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission).
In this regard, the contents of these reports were compiled and brought to the attention of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government to ensure that issues arising are comprehended within that Department’s new regulatory framework to reform the regulation of the collection of household waste.
