322. Deputy Barry Cowen asked the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government the number of local authorities that allow and do not allow, respectively, businesses to pay their rates by monthly direct debit. [16318/17]
View answerLocal authorities are under a statutory obligation to levy rates on any property used for commercial purposes, in accordance with the details entered in the valuation lists prepared by the independent Commissioner of Valuation under the Valuation Acts 2001 to 2015. The levying and collection of rates are matters for each individual local authority. My Department does not have information in respect of the number of local authorities that allow businesses to pay rates by monthly direct debit.
