In accordance with the responsibilities assigned to Minister of State, Patrick O'Donovan, in July 2016, he has general responsibility for sport, with a particular focus on a number of matters including the Sports Capital Programme.

His responsibilities are the same as those previously held by Minister of State Michael Ring, with all final decisions on allocations of financial support being made by the senior minister, as had been the case under the last government.
