Deputy Michael McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the annual cost of the research and development tax credit in each year since 2012, including 2017; the number of multinationals claiming the credit in each of these years; the taxable profits of the multinationals that claimed the research and development credit in each of these years; the number of SMEs claiming the credit in each of these years; the taxable profits of the SMEs that claimed the research and development credit in each of these years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that information in respect of the annual cost of the Research and Development (R&D) credit and the number of companies availing of the scheme is as follows:

Information in respect of 2016 is not yet available as the bulk of the returns have only recently been filed and will be analysed in the coming months.

The available data in respect of foreign owned multinational companies and SMEs (defined as companies with less than 250 employees) claiming the R&D credit in respect of taxable profits, and number of claimants, is as shown in the following table:
