292. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice and Equality further to Parliamentary Question No. 280 of 23 of January 2018, the number of persons that have been killed or sustained a serious injury, respectively, in road traffic collisions involving a learner driver who was driving unaccompanied by a qualified driver in which the learner driver did not die; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have requested a report from An Garda Síochána in relation to the statistics sought by the Deputy and I will be in contact with the Deputy directly on receipt of this report.

The following deferred reply was received under Standing Order 42A
I refer to Parliamentary Question 292 of 15 May 2018 in which the Deputy asked for statistics relating to the road traffic collisions involving learner drivers unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
As the Deputy will recall, I undertook to have enquiries made in relation to his query. Officials in my Department contacted An Garda Síochána, who have responded with the following table.

Number of fatalities in Fatal Collisions involving Learner Unaccompanied Drivers in which the learner driver did not die

Numbers who sustained a serious injury in Serious Injury Collisions involving Learner Unaccompanied Drivers in which the learner driver did not die
