176. Deputy Billy Kelleher asked the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation her views on a proposal reported in the media (details supplied) that the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has requested the powers to mount electronic surveillance and intercept communications such as tapping phones and emails as a further tool to fight combat white collar crime. I am aware of the media report to which the Deputy refers. However, I have not yet received a request from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission on this matter. I will consider any such request in consultation with the Minister for Justice and Equality and the Attorney General.
