360. Deputy Joan Burton asked the Minister for Health if he will meet a group (details supplied) regarding the implementation of guidelines on the standards of care for transgender persons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29187/18]
View answerTransgender-specific guidelines have been developed by WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) and the Endocrine Society (who updated their guidelines in 2017) and were devised by experts in transgender healthcare, along with members of the International Transgender, Transsexual and LGBT community, and supported by the Transgender Equality Network of Ireland (TENI). A comprehensive multidisciplinary psychosocial assessment is recommended prior to hormone therapy by Endocrinology services.
Ireland has adapted these guidelines for local implementation. Clinical services to specific patient groups are a matter for the patient and their clinical team. It would be inappropriate for the Minister to meet any group to discuss clinical issues.
