99. Deputy Niall Collins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the bank account of an organisation (details supplied) has been closed, consequently making it difficult for the organisation to undertake its work; the action he has taken in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A commercial bank is not, as a general matter, obliged to provide services to any specific customer. However, it would be disappointing if any civil society organisation engaging in lawful activities in this country was unable to function due to issues in accessing banking services. The operation of a healthy civil society is an essential element of a democracy.

In the present case, I have not been made aware of any difficulties or issues experienced by this organisation in relation to banking services in Ireland. It would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment.
