Deputy Noel Grealish asked the Minister for Rural and Community Development if legislation or powers are available to allow local authorities to CPO land for the provision of burial grounds; if so, the details of the legislation or powers; if there is no legislation, his plans to introduce such legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Local Government Acts provide powers to local authorities to compulsorily purchase lands, including for the provision of land for burial grounds.

Part 14 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 can also be used by local authorities to compulsorily acquire land.
