As Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has statutory responsibility for promoting the development of an integrated, accessible public transport network.

Accessibility features are built into all new public transport infrastructure projects and vehicles from the design stage. However, work remains to be done in terms of the retro-fitting of older infrastructure to make it accessible for people with a disability, for example Victorian era railway infrastructure. To address infrastructural legacy issues, my Department funds an ongoing programme of accessibility improvement grants to upgrade older infrastructure and facilities which is managed by the NTA.

In light of the NTA's responsibilities in this matter, I have forwarded your question to the NTA for direct reply to you. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Order 42A
