433. Deputy Seán Canney asked the Minister for Health his plans to support amputees with the financial cost of prosthetics in view of the fact that they are not included on the long-term illness scheme (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29603/20]
View answerUnder the Long Term Illness (LTI) Scheme, patients receive drugs, medicines, and medical and surgical appliances directly related to the treatment of their illness, free of charge. Prosthetics for amputees are not provided under the LTI Scheme. However, people who cannot, without undue hardship, arrange for the provision of medical services for themselves and their dependants may be eligible for a medical card. In the assessment process, the HSE can take into account medical costs incurred by an individual or a family.
Matters concerning taxation refunds come within the remit of the Minister for Finance.
