Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Transport the engagement he had with local authorities in relation to developing priority cycle routes along existing tertiary roads and available roadside space; if funding will be provided for the development of such routes; if a pilot programme will be considered to gauge the effectiveness of such a scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerThe improvement and maintenance of public regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority, in accordance with the provisions of Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993. Works on those roads are funded from local authorities' own resources supplemented by State grants. The initial selection and prioritisation of works to be funded is also a matter for the local authority.
My Department is currently giving consideration to the scope for repurposing certain tertiary roads as "quiet lanes" suitable for use as cycle routes. In the context of examining updates to the Traffic Signs Manual, consideration will be given to designing a new sign to delineate such routes and to developing an associated Advice Note for local authorities.
If such a policy is adopted following consideration, a pilot programme may be considered for implementation in 2022.
