282. Deputy Pa Daly asked the Minister for Justice if she will establish an independent review into the conviction of a person (details supplied) as previously requested unanimously by the Tralee Municipal District. [38132/21]
View answerAs the Deputy will be aware, this case relates to the murder of a member of An Garda Síochána over 75 years ago. The individual in question was tried and convicted of this murder by the Special Criminal Court, and subsequently executed on 1 December 1944. While I of course do not support capital punishment in any form, I am not aware of any matter of public interest that would necessitate reopening these matters. In addition, the Court found the person in question guilty and it would not be appropriate for me to seek to take issue with the independent decision of the Court in the absence of any clear evidence that a miscarriage of justice occurred.
