Deputy Brendan Smith asked the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth the outcome of the consultations following the publication of the Initial State Report under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the next stage in the consultation process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerIreland ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2018. Ireland’s Initial State Report under Article 35 of the Convention was formally submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by Ireland’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva on the 8th of November 2021. The report gives an article by article account of how the Convention is being implemented in Ireland. The report was drafted following extensive stakeholder consultations which took place over a three month period in early 2021, including consultation sessions with stakeholder groups.
The report will now be considered by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Ireland will be invited to appear before a future meeting of the Committee to discuss the report. I do not have an indication, at this time, as to when the review may take place.
Outside of formal review by the UN Committee the consultations provide a wealth of data which will assist in the development and formulation of future policy measures.
