View answerThe CSO publishes an annual estimate of the usually resident population, in its Population and Migration Estimates release. This release contains an age breakdown. The latest figures are for April 2022 and the following table shows the estimated population, from April 2016 to April 2022, in the 65+ age group and the total population.

There were 768,900 persons living in Ireland aged 65 and over in April 2022. Those aged 65 and over had an increase in population share between 2016 and 2022, increasing from 13.3% to 15.1% of the total, a volume increase of 139,100 persons.
