Deputy Thomas Pringle asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to provide a full list of the individual projects/schemes funded under the Brexit Adjustment Reserve Fund spend of €24 million by his Department; the amount of funding allocated in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerAn Post, via my Department, successfully submitted an application for funding from the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR) in relation to the management of EU Customs and VAT requirements applying to all An Post UK traffic following the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. This important change in international trade has had a significant negative impact on the postal sector in Ireland. Brexit also coincided with long planned, extensive changes to EU Customs regulations governing goods entering and leaving the EU. All traffic from the UK which was previously categorised as intra-EU became non-EU and subject to Customs related obligations which directly impacted on An Post operationally and commercially.
There has been a profound and direct impact on the company which has meant that An Post has incurred a significant financial burden directly associated with the adverse impact of Brexit. An Post has made a significant investment in systems, infrastructure and knowledge in order to overcome the disruption and challenges and a sum of €23.1m has been paid out to An Post from BAR.
