Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Transport if he will consider the installation of average speed zone cameras on stretches of national, national secondary and regional roads where speeding is more of a routine driver behaviour than the exception; if locations that are treated like 'fly through' localities would be considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerAs Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to the National Roads Programme. Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the operation and management of national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. This is also subject to the Public Spending Code and the necessary statutory approvals.
In relation to national roads, TII have an action in the Road Safety Strategy to prepare a technical paper on locations where Average Speed Cameras would be appropriate. This paper is expected to be finalised by year end.
With regard to regional and local roads, average speed cameras would be the responsibility of An Garda Síochana and the Local Authorities.
