Deputy Jackie Cahill asked the Minister for Transport if the area knowledge module of the taxi licence exam in Ireland will be updated to take account of the use of satellite navigation (details supplied) and Eircodes as common practice in the industry, considering a taxi driver in Nenagh, County Tipperary is expected to answer questions in this module on local area knowledge in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary,; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The regulation of the small public service vehicle (SPSV) industry, including the Area Knowledge Module of the SPSV Driver Entry Test, is a matter for the independent transport regulator, the National Transport Authority (NTA), under the provisions of the Taxi Regulation Acts 2013 and 2016. I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of the SPSV industry.

Accordingly, I have referred your question to the NTA for direct reply to you. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within 10 working days.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Order 51.
