The Irish and European flags were raised outside Leinster House today to mark Europe Day 2020.
Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May each year to commemorate the anniversary of the “Schuman declaration”. It was in this document that the then-French foreign minister, Robert Schuman, set out his idea for a new form of political co-operation in Europe. This proposal is considered to be the genesis of what is now the European Union.
Today is the closest Oireachtas sitting day to Europe Day.
