Jobs Committee to discuss entrepreneurs and women in the tech industry

26 Jan 2015, 12:27

Entrepreneurs, women in the tech industry, skill needs and the need for balanced regional development of entrepreneurial hubs will be on the agenda at this week’s meeting of the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation taking place tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27th.

26 January 2015

Representatives from Irish Exporters Association (IEA) will be appearing before the Committee to discuss the matters. The Irish Exporters Association is the independent representative body for all Irish exporters and as such, it offers a range of practical help and support.

Committee Chair, Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy, TD, said: “Encouraging and supporting Irish business women is a major priority for the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. Gender imbalance is one of the most well-documented features of the tech industry and the Committee will take this opportunity to assess the challenges facing female entrepreneurs in 2015.”

On the issue of entrepreneurs and balanced regional hubs, the Chair commented: “If long term, sustainable employment is to be achieved, more attention must be given to spreading infrastructure throughout rural Ireland. The Committee will be assessing what options are being considered in this regard. This follows on from the IEA’s recommendation last year that regional centres of excellence and Local Enterprise Offices are properly supported, thus utilising the many entrepreneurial capabilities already in place in rural Ireland.”

Also up for discussion tomorrow are two EU legislative proposals relating to the signing, provisional application and conclusion of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the West African States, ECOWAS and the UEMOA, of the one part, and the European Union and its Member States, of the other part. (COM (2014) 576 and COM (2014) 578.

The meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 27th of January 2015 at 1.30pm. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
