Committee on Future of Mental Health Care to hear from Oversight Group for ‘A Vision for Change’ Review

29 May 2018, 16:09

The Committee on the Future of Mental Health Care will tomorrow hear from Mr Hugh Kane, Chair of the Oversight Group for the Review of ‘A Vision for Change’, as well as from Officials from the Department of Health.

Committee Chairperson, Joan Freeman, said today, “At tomorrow’s meeting, Committee Members will seek an update on the work of the Oversight Group, which is tasked with reviewing Mental Health Policy, following the completion of an Expert Evidence Review. The Joint Committee’s primary objective is to achieve a cross-party vision for the future of mental health services in Ireland. Since its establishment the Committee has been concerned that a parallel process (Oversight Group) established within the Department without the relationship between the two being defined and without any relationship existing in practice will be wasteful of time and resources at the very least. The Committee sought, on a number of occasions, to engage with the Group but found that securing meaningful engagement has proven difficult. The Committee is keen that tomorrows meeting will open the lines of communication between it and the Group in order that both can work together effectively to ensure a positive future for Mental Health Services in Ireland.”

The meeting will start at 5.30pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.
