Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement to hear from Good Friday Agreement negotiator Jonathan Powell

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement chaired by Deputy Fergus O'Dowd will meet on Thursday June 29th to resume its series of meetings with the architects of the Good Friday Agreement. 

Jonathan Powell will address the meeting which will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30-16:30.

Mr Powell was Chief of Staff to Tony Blair from 1997 to 2007 and the chief British Government negotiator on Northern Ireland during that time in office.

Mr Powell was a British diplomat from 1979 to 1996 working on the negotiations to return Hong Kong to China in the early 1980s, the CSCE human rights talks, CDE arms control talks with the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s, and the ‘Two plus Four’’ talks on German reunification in the late 1980s. He is currently the CEO and Founder of Inter-Mediate, a charity that promotes mediation and conflict resolution.

The Committee previously heard from Tim O’Connor, Rory Montgomery and David Donoghue - Irish officials who were involved in the Good Friday Agreement negotiations.

The Committee will continue to meet with a range of people involved in the negotiations, including the politicians involved, diplomats and civil servants in the coming weeks.
