Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson to address Seanad Éireann

10 Jun 2024, 15:56

Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson will address Seanad Éireann on Wednesday June 12th at 1pm.

Speaking ahead of the address, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “We are delighted to welcome the first female President of Ireland and Chair of the Elders Mary Robinson to address the Seanad.

“As a global leader in environmental causes, Mrs Robinson will provide an important account of the issue and will really highlight the necessity of a firm and just response to the emergency to protect our planet and the most vulnerable people across the world.”

“Mrs Robinson is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as being a founding member and current Chair of the Elders. She was also a former member of the Seanad, serving from 1969 to 1989 where she championed social issues such as the ban on contraception, divorce, the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the family planning bill.”

“Mrs Robinson’s address will focus on the ongoing climate emergency and her extensive experience and leadership in global climate initiatives. Climate breakdown is one of the single most important issues of our time and is one of the most prominent threats to our world. It is of utmost urgency that we listen to climate justice leaders so that we can take the necessary actions to reverse damaging effects and to prevent the destruction of the livelihoods of those most impacted by climate breakdown.”

“According to a 2023 Environmental Protection Agency Report, 85% of Irish people believe that politicians, government, business, and citizens should be doing more to combat climate change. Recognising the inequality of adverse climate effects on populations is a vital step in tackling the issue and Mrs. Robinson is one of the most consequential and influential figures in the area, thus we are immensely privileged and grateful to have her address the Seanad this week.”

The proceedings in respect of the address shall commence at 1 p.m. and shall conclude no later than 2.15 p.m. and shall consist of:

Opening speech of welcome by the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann Senator Jerry Buttimer
 Address by Mrs. Robinson (approx. 20 mins)
 Six minutes contribution from Leader of each of the seven Groups in the Seanad (or nominee) (7 x 6 = 42 mins)
 Response by Mrs. Robinson (approx. 5 mins)
 Closing speech of thanks by the Leas-Chathaoirleach, Senator Mark Daly.
