25 Jun 2024, 17:01

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday June 26th to discuss the EU’s funding of the development sector and the EU’s role in international development.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House from 10:00 to 12:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

Jane-Ann McKenna, Dóchas,
Angela O’Neill De Guilio, Trócaire,
Emily Wigens, The ONE Campaign,
Dominic Crowley, Concern Worldwide.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Colm Brophy said: “We welcome this opportunity to converse with representatives from Irish Development sector about their thoughts on EU funding.”

“The organisations we will meet with are all incredibly valuable to the international community and conduct significant work across the world to support and empower the most vulnerable people on this planet.”

"There have been changes in direction of EU external policies and this has created uncertainty in respect to the future funding of EU development programmes. Ireland is a significant player in this area and represents a strong, credible voice on an EU stage, therefore we welcome the opportunity to have a detailed discussion with representatives from the sector to better understand the work that needs to be done to ensure that those furthest behind are protected and supported into the future.”
