Admissibility of questions

Deadlines are applied for the receipt of parliamentary questions. When questions are received, the staff of the Questions Office examine them to ensure they comply with Standing Orders and notify the relevant Departments of the questions that have been received.

If a question does not comply with Standing Orders, it may be disallowed in whole or in part by the Ceann Comhairle, or it may be reworded with the consent of the Member concerned where this is considered necessary so that it can be accepted.

Admissibility criteria

  • Questions must comply with Standing Orders, specifically SOs 42A to 54 inclusive.
  • Questions to a Minister must concern public affairs or matters of administration for which that Minister is officially responsible, including Government policy in respect of bodies under the aegis of that Minister’s Department.
  • Questions should seek to obtain information or seek to clarify facts or policies. Each question should relate to one issue only and should be as brief as possible.
  • Accepted questions are published by the Questions Office in the Questions Paper of the Dáil sitting in which they are to be answered.
