Vol. 3 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - DUNDALK AND NEWRY RAILWAY.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the destruction of bridges on the Dundalk and Newry Railway. If he will have representations made to the proper authorities to have these bridges repaired, and have the line reopened, and, if so, will adequate protection be given to prevent further damage. If he is aware that the closing of this line has the effect of diverting a large volume of traffic from its natural course to the area within the Six Counties, thereby causing serious inconvenience to the residents of the district and loss to traders within the Saorstát?

I am answering this question for the Minister for Industry and Commerce. As stated in the discussion on this matter yesterday, the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Company is anxious to proceed with repairs when military protection is available. The Ministry for Defence has undertaken to provide protection whenever the Com-requires it, and I am accordingly requesting the Company to proceed with the work at once.
