Vol. 3 No. 23

[WRITTEN ANSWERS.] - BIRR FATALITY.

asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been called to the circumstances under which Edward Donohue (aged 12 years), Sandymount, Birr, Offaly, was accidentally killed by a member of the National Army at Birr Workhouse on August the 29th, 1922; whether he is prepared to accept the recommendation of the jury asking the military authorities to consider the question of giving suitable compensation to his parents, and if, and when, the Army authorities will be in a position to arrange payment of such compensation as may be agreed to in this and any other cases where they have already agreed to accept liability.

The circumstances under which Edward Donohue was killed have been carefully considered, and a grant of £10 as compensation is being paid to-day to his parents.

I am not aware that there are any unsettled cases in which the Army have agreed to accept liability for compensation.
