CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - A BEREHAVEN PRISONER.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that it is alleged that a man named Ted O'Sullivan, when arrested on the 1st instant, at Castletown Berehaven, was beaten with rifles in the barracks of that town; that on the journey to Bantry he was further ill-treated by the escort, and again on the Square, Bantry, in the presence of about fifty persons; to ask that a public inquiry be held into the allegations against the troops.

(replying forMinister for Defence): Mr. O'Sullivan and two other men were arrested on the 1st instant at Eyeries. When they were being escorted to Bantry they attempted to escape and were recaptured. The allegations of ill-treatment of O'Sullivan are denied. The matter was inquired into by a Committee of Investigation on the 5th inst., but Mr. O'Sullivan declined to make any statement. It is not proposed to hold a public inquiry.
