Vol. 6 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - MILITARY OCCUPATION OF CORK HOUSES.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that awards made to Timothy Murray, Dunmanway; Cornelius Riordan, Dunmanway, and Jeremiah Collins, Paris House, Dunmanway, Co. Cork, by the Commissioners of Public Works in respect of the occupation and damage to claimants' premises by the National Army, have been refused by claimants on the grounds of being entirely inadequate; whether such awards were recommended by an official who only spent a few minutes in each house; whether the awards did not cover damage to furniture and furniture taken away in each case, and whether he will order that the claims will be again thoroughly investigated?

I am informed that the claim lodged by Timothy Murray, Dunmanway, was extravagant. The award made to him did not include any allowance in respect of damage to furniture, but it was arranged to make inquiry into this portion of his claim, and a further communication will be addressed to him.

No awards have yet been made on the claims furnished by Cornelius Riordan, Dunmanway, and Jeremiah Collins, Paris House, Dunmanway.

All claims arising out of the commandeering of property by the Army are subjected to a thorough investigation before any award is made.
