Vol. 6 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - GRANTS FOR ROAD WORK.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is right to assume that the grants mentioned as being available for road work to the County Councils in the Saorstát are derived from sources of motor taxation, and, if so, if he will state how he derives his authority to fix wages to be paid for this work?

The Deputy is no doubt aware of the fact that with the object of relieving unemployment sums derived from motor taxation have been largely augmented.

According as County Councils can submit acceptable schemes, allocations to the extent of £1,000,000 can be made at once.

As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to Parts II. and III. of the Development and Road Improvement Funds Act, 1909.

Is the Minister satisfied that under the Section of the Act he has referred to he can fix the wages of road workers in the various counties?
