Vol. 7 No. 3

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - FACILITATING ROAD TRAVELLING IN SAORSTÁT.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will consider the giving of a grant to local bodies for the purpose of levelling all raised covering over gullets and drains on country roads, in view of the great danger to traffic, occasioned by the present condition of such roads, and if, seeing that there are many dangerous turns on roads, he will take steps to make them more safe; further, if he will consider the placing of sign boards on all cross-roads, indicating the towns, and the number of miles to each.

There is no reason why a special grant should be made for the purpose mentioned in the first part of the question. The matter can be dealt with by the local authorities as ordinary maintenance, and I would suggest that the Deputy might make representations to the County Council concerned.

In the allocation of monies from the recent road grant local authorities are giving attention to the question of dangerous turns on roads.

As regards the placing of sign boards at cross-roads the County Councils are already empowered to provide such sign boards under Section 10 (2) of the Motor Car Act, 1903. I could not normally erect such sign boards on public roads, but I am considering this whole question in connection with future legislation.
