Vol. 7 No. 18

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION—IRISH CLASSES.

asked the Minister for Education if it is the intention of the Government to discontinue the attendance grants and teachers' bonus paid for Irish classes conducted by the Technical Instruction Committees.

The question of the future measure of State assistance to be given for technical instruction is at present under consideration, and it cannot at present be stated what conclusions are likely to be reached in the matter. No express intention of the kind indicated in the question has been declared, but in connection with Section 4 of the Local Government (Temporary Provisions) Amendment Act, 1924, which empowers the raising of a rate of 1d. in the £, the Minister for Finance has found it necessary to safeguard the interests of the Exchequer by making it clear that the mere granting of this power to local authorities could not of itself be assumed to imply anything affecting the extent to which financial aid should hereafter be given by the State for the purposes of technical instruction.
