CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ACQUISITION OF LANDS FOR RELIEF OF CONGESTION.

SEAN MAC GIOLLA 'N RIOGH

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he can state what approximately is the area of land in the Saorstát that is in process of being acquired by the Land Commission under the several Land Purchase Acts for the relief of congestion; whether he can say approximately how long the work of distributing and dividing this land will take.

Under the Land Act, 1923, the Land Commission are investigating with a view to purchase some 350,000 acres of untenanted lands, and on estates the subject of proceedings under the Acts 1903-9 they are acquiring a further area of some 2,000 acres. These lands will be utilised mainly for the relief of congestion. The work of distributing and dividing the untenanted land as acquired will be carried out as expeditiously as possible, but it is not possible at present to state how long it will be before the work is completed.
