Vol. 9 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BROADCASTING IN THE SAORSTAT.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is in a position to state when a Broadcasting Station may be in operation in the Saorstát; whether he will expedite the matter with a view to taking full advantage of the winter months; if he will state what policy he intends to adopt towards radio development in the Saorstát; if arrangements have yet been made by his Department for the holding of examinations for certificates of proficiency in radio telegraphy, and whether the public will be notified of such examinations; if any arrangements have yet been arrived at between the British Post Office and the Saorstát Authorities regarding the question of reciprocity of certificates of proficiency in radio telegraphy.

The proposals for the establishment of a Broadcasting Station in the Saorstát have been before the Department of Finance for the past few weeks, and I am awaiting its decision.

I am prepared to facilitate as far as possible the development of radio-telegraphy and radio-telephony in this country.

A scheme for the holding of examinations for certificates of proficiency in radio-telegraphy has been prepared and has been submitted to the British Post Office Administration inviting its concurrence to the proposal that Irish and British certificates should be mutually recognised in the services of both countries. The British Authorities have been asked for an early decision, and as soon as this matter has been settled satisfactorily no time will be lost in holding the first examinations. A public announcement of the date and place of the examinations will be duly made.
