Vol. 9 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. MAYO COMPENSATION CLAIM.

LIAM MAC SIOGHUIRD

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that nineteen claims for compensation for personal injuries inflicted by British Forces in the Achill, Glenhest and Newport districts, Co. Mayo, have been disallowed although medical certificates supported the claims and the claimants offered to tender personal evidence which was not heard, and whether these claims will be reconsidered.

I am aware that the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee have not considered it necessary in all cases to call upon the applicants to attend before them to give personal evidence. In cases such as those to which the Deputy refers, the Committee have carefully considered the evidence placed before them in the forms of application and medical certificates. From such evidence, which is both detailed and ample, they have come to the conclusion that the injuries were not of a serious or permanent nature, and that the applicants suffered no hardship. In general, I see no reason, therefore, why such cases should be reopened, but if the Deputy furnishes me with fresh evidence in support of a particular application for reconsideration, I will give it attention.
