Vol. 9 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PRICE OF BREAD.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what steps he has taken, if any, to deal with the recent increase in the price of bread.

I have no power to deal with changes in the price of bread, but the Trade Loans (Guarantee) Act affords a means of assisting any persons who come forward with practicable proposals designed to reduce the price.

Does not the Minister think it would be better if he had powers to check rises in prices, and will he take steps to obtain them?

That question has been fully gone into, and it was decided that the best means to bring down prices were the provisions in Part II. of the Trade Loans (Guarnatee) Act.

Will the Minister advise increases in wages in accordnace with the increase in price of bread? Will he advise the District Councils to increase the wages of the workers as the proper way to meet the increase in the price of bread?

It would be an impertinence on my part to suggest anything to the Councils.

You might get your colleague, the Minister for Local Government, to do it.
