Vol. 9 No. 27

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - VOLUNTEER'S DEPENDENT'S ALLOWANCE.

asked the Minister for Defence whether a claim for dependent's allowance has been received from the mother of Volunteer Casserley, No. 47499, H. T. Section, Curragh Camp, and whether, in view of the fact that this man contributed £1 1s. weekly to his mother, he will expedite the settlement of this claim.

Mrs. Casserley's claim was rejected on the grounds that the amount normally contributed by her son, John, towards the upkeep of the home, over and above the cost of his own maintenance therein for a reasonable period prior to enlistment, was less than the minimum required by the regulations, namely, 12/- a week, before an allowance might be issued. It was ascertained that prior to enlistment, John Casserley had been in receipt of about £1 per week. After making a reasonable deduction in respect of maintenance, clothing, pocket-money and incidental expenses, the sum contributed to the home could not have warranted the issue of an allowance.
