Vol. 10 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LEIX CO. SURVEYOR'S ESTIMATE.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that at a meeting of the Leix County Council, held on February 12th, 1925, the County Surveyor's estimate was reduced from £49,266 to £28,000; whether, at a further special meeting held on February 26th, 1925, to consider a communication from his Department regarding their action, it was decided to reduce the estimate by a further £8,000, to £20,000; whether he is aware of the dangerous and disgraceful condition of the roads for the past two years, and if he will state what steps it is intended to take in order to repair and maintain same in good order and condition, also if he has yet received a report of the inquiry held some months ago into the administration of the Leix County Council and Board of Health, and if, and when, he intends to publish same, and also his decision arising out of the Inspector's report.

The answer to the first and second parts of the question is in the affirmative. As to the third part, I cannot accept the description given by the Deputy as to the condition of the roads, as substantial work has been executed under the grants from the Road Fund. I have, however, asked the Chief Roads Engineer to keep me informed of the necessities of the case, and I will take such steps as. I may be advised to see that the County Council discharge the duty imposed upon them by law.

The inquiry referred to was adjourned pending an audit of the accounts, which is now approaching completion.

Could the Minister say when the last report was received from the Chief Roads Inspector as to the condition of the roads in this county, and also upon whose advice he is relying in order to see that the functions of the Council are carried out properly?

I am waiting for the inquiry to be completed. The inquiry was suspended pending the audit. I expect the audit will be completed in about a week; then the inquiry can be resumed, and when I get the full facts I can go into the matter.

Can the Minister say when was the last official inspection by the Chief Roads Engineer?

I could not without notice.

What information has the Minister at his disposal to show that the roads are not in the condition described by me?

To begin with, I have my own personal experience, as I motored over these roads.

The Minister has not been around for an excursion, I think.
