Vol. 11 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUBLIN CATTLE MARKET.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has seen a copy of the Town Clerk's letter of the 12th March, 1925, in which it is stated that while the Commissioners have under consideration the purpose for which the recently filled-in sloblands at Fairview are to be utilised, the Town Clerk is of opinion that a new cattle market and abattoir should be built there; whether he is aware that this reclaimed land is required as a recreation ground for the children of our city workers; that the only people the proposed new market could possibly benefit are the English and Scotch exporters and those owning land in the immediate neighbourhood; that the live-stock sales-masters are unanimously against the scheme, and that the cost would be enormous, and whether he will communicate those facts to the Commissioners.

I have seen the reference in the Press. I have no functions in this matter at its present stage. May I suggest to the Deputy that he might lay his views before the City Commissioners, who, no doubt, will give this very important subject the fullest consideration.

Is it not for the Minister to point out to the Commissioners this important matter and the facts dealing with it? Is the Minister aware that the title of the city to these sloblands is derived from a document dated the 9th May, 1906, in which it is expressly stated that these particular sloblands are to be kept over as a park and recreation ground for the citizens of Dublin and so to be maintained by the Corporation of Dublin.

This matter, as I mentioned before, is primarily a matter for the City Commissioners, who have taken the place of the Dublin Corporation. I have no function in the matter until it comes before me after they have taken their decision.
